Primary School Student Leadership Workshop @ SPS & WRPS

September 11, 2008

Date: 11th September 2008

The two concurrent student leadership trainings held at Sembawang Primary School and Woodlands Ring Primary School was organised by the RSStudentcouncil. Its objectives was to help unleash the leadership potential in the Primary 3, 4 and 5 prefects through a fun and interactive approach.

The training was a success for both schools. The students were bubbly, enthusiastic and very keen to learn more about leadership. Their positive learning attitudes have undoubtedly made the day of the facilitators. We are very glad to be able to work with Sembawang Primary School and Woodlands Ring Primary School this time round. We express our sincere gratitude towards both the primary schools once again, for giving us a chance to conduct this workshop. The experience gained was valuable and the fond memories was unforgettable.

We hereby thank Ms Mendy Kok and Mr Alan Low once again, for accompanying us to the primary schools. (:

  1. The students were very excited at first and took some time to settle down. After the ice-breakers, they started to mix around more. I think the facilitators did a very good job but some are unclear of the programme. Next time, try to avoid last minute changes so that everything can run as planned. This time, I think it was very good that everything had been packed in bags early and ready to go after school. The transport was really convenient and saved a lot of time.

We had a few people who were from that school so there were no problem in the primary school compound. Though facilitators were needed to be reminded of the time sometimes, their instructions and guidance were clear. The prefects are quite friendly and would laugh even at a small joke. I could see the close relationship between the councillors and prefects. The prefects also enjoyed themselves through times of humour and the games. This round is another success for us!

  2. The primary school leadership training held today was indeed fruitful. I am very glad to be able to share my experience with them and do hope that after this training, the students would have learnt something in which they can apply in their life. I went to Woodlands Ring Primary School and the students were already waiting for us in the AVA room patiently when we stepped into the room. Their discipline was commendable and it was really heartwarming to see the students enjoy the activities being planned for them. When talking to the little children, sometimes there is a need to be more patient. Overall, the students at WRPS were very easy to work with and i enjoyed spending my time with all of them there.

  3. The training was fun. I can see that from the faces of the prefects. I was happy about that. Overall, the whole thing went smoothly but there are a few points that i think could be improved.
1)the speakers could be more prepared. It is not very good to do the whole talk impromptu.
2)as we are supposed to relate the talk to the game, therefore i suggest that the speaker could take notes of what are the things they could relate while walking around.things can be very easily forgotten.
3)set the number of questions and the number of prizes correctly.if they tally, things can go more smoothly and there would be no need for us to think of extra questions on the spot. I tink that is about all:)

  4. I am very glad that i can learn how to lead a group of people and though us, they know how to lead a group of people and learn something too. Actually can say both of us can learn from each other though this leadership training. And can apply to their life. Went to Woodlands Ring Primary School, their teacher and students were waiting for us in the AVA room. All the games, the students enjoy. They are really nice, cute. When we want to say something, they will be very quiet and listen to us. I hope that can join more events like this. Overall, the students at WRPS were very good, enjoyed spending my time with them there.

  5. It was my second time going for this primary school student leadership training, and this time round, together with other councilors, I went to Sembawang primary school. Indeed, all of the prefects were very cheerful and enthusiastic, constantly making the whole AVA room so lively and allowing the facilitators to have not much of a problem to mingle well with them during the games sessions. It was a headache for the facilitators to calm the boisterous kids, though, but nevertheless, it was a joy for all the facilitators to see how much the kids have enjoyed themselves. Also, another problem we faced was the limitation of time. Not all games were played, some games were cut short, and many last minute decisions were made to ensure the students to play happily and be able to learn effectively. Although it was said to be a primary school student leadership training, I believed, all the facilitators and even myself have learnt a lot during the training and from the students themselves. At the end of the training, all of us took a group photo, together with the students. I hope the students will remember what they have learnt during this training and strive to become a good leader, serving their school well. Once again, thank you for all the student councilors for volunteering your service. Well done everyone! (:

  6. Firstly when I knew I was allocated to Woodlands Ring in this training, I was very honoured as I am given the chance to train my juniors into future leaders. During this training, as I progressed with the young leaders, I realise that not only they were very active, they were also very involved in participating the activities as I witnessed everybody volunteering to answer questions during the quiz and the high rate of activity as they were playing the games. Though at moments they could be difficult to handle, but I generally enjoyed my interaction with them. It also allows me to better my skills in public relations as this training really puts this to test, so I hope that I can put whatever I learnt in this area into use back in Student Council. It also allows me to witness their eagerness to learn new things. On the whole, I benefited much from this training as I learnt about different ways to improve communication and quality leadership, some of which did not even cross my mind. I look forward to more of this trainings and I hope that the junior student leaders in my group can enjoy this training through their interaction with me though I appeared stern at times.

  7. Im very glad to be involved in this pri sch leadership workshop. My trip to Sembawang pri was fun.All the students were very excited from the expressions they gave us.I am not comfortable to be the speaker as i prefers to be with the students, playing the games and to have fun as their facilitator.
But most importantly, teach them the leadership skills.Overall it was a success. Although some of us had hard time trying to keep them quiet, we have enjoyed ourselves there.I really hope the students have learnt something and apply them to their future life(:

  8. Through this primary school leadership training conducted in the primary schools, I’ve experienced that leading a group of people wasn’t an easy task.
I learnt from those kids how to be more sociable and fun to people whom I don’t know.
It was indeed an enriching experience for both councillors and primary school kids.
However, I felt that there are some areas which I think we should consider:
    1. Time planning
    2. Space constraints (let them know what are we planning so that they could prepare for us a bigger room)
These are just some of my personal opinions, but everything went well overall. (:
I’ve really enjoyed and hope to have more of such events again. (:

  9. The training was interesting. I went to Sembawang Primary school and the primary school kids there were very lively and energetic. I was happy when I saw their smiling faces. It was very comforting when they appreciated what was prepared for them by being happy all the way. It was a really fun experience. Overall it was a quite successful but maybe next time we could have more outdoor activities or bring the kids outdoors as suggested by one of the primary school kids. I enjoyed this training a lot and I hope there would be more to come. :D

  10. i felt that i have learnt alot from the leadership training in WRPS.
i have learnt that managing primary school children is not as simple as it may seem.
it is not easy to get the students attention and get them to enjoy the activities.
i feel that it is benficial for both the students and the councilliors.
i have learnt alot and have enjoyed myself.

  11. The training was indeed an enriching experience for all. For me , i went to Sembawang Primary School as a facilitator. Being able to lead a group of active but co-operative students was indeed a pleasure. Even though there were space constraints; the facilitators were able to make use of the space provided to do the activities, if more space would be provided it would be better. Time was another factor, the time for activities were quite short and thus, we were unable to tell them what the activity was about and how they can improve on the next round, etc. All in all , the event was a successful one , and i hope to see more of these events as it’s an enriching one.

  12. I think that this Primary Leadership Training is a very useful one. Not only that the primary school leaders get tips from us, but our councillors also get another chance of leading and passing on what they know about leadership that they have learn through trainings and camps.
However, i think that if we would be more prepared for these training, the whole session could be better.
Overall, i think that these 2 trainings are successful. At least we met our objective the primary school student leaders enjoyed themselves and learnt something.
